Caitlyn Jenner: A Role Model?

The critics who argue that Caitlyn Jenner should not be embraced as a role model do not understand, recognize, or accept the concept of the universal struggle.  The struggle to become who you want to be is a universal human struggle.  It is not a transgender phenomenon!

Should the type of struggle be judged as acceptable or non acceptable? Is dyslexia different from gender dysphoria? Jenner was born with both.  What did he do?  He figured out Right Fit solutions.

Jenner as a small child was called lazy and stupid because he could not read.  He had to repeat the second grade.  It was not until later that Bruce was diagnosed with dyslexia which effects reading, writing, and thinking.  Many people with dyslexia become withdrawn and isolated, resulting from their feelings of stress and anxiety.  Bruce, who already suffered from low self-esteem, also felt withdrawn and isolated.

In the fifth grade Bruce’s life changed.  He ran a race at school and was the fastest kid in school.  From then on, he devoted himself to athletics. He was recognized as a gifted athlete: football, basketball, and water skiing.  Bruce was no longer treated as the lazy and stupid dyslexic kid.  As an adult he said that, “Sports saved my life.”

At age 26, Bruce Jenner won the Olympic Decathlon Gold Medal with the title World’s Greatest
Athlete.   His name is on the list of gifted dyslexics:

Before Bruce won the Olympics, he learned that he had gender dysphoria.  Finally, a name for what he was feeling.  Simply stated: he was a woman trapped in a man’s body.  After he won the Olympics, his desire to become a woman became stronger.  He knew he would never feel like a successful man, if winning the Olympics did not do it.

Why did Bruce wait 55 years to become Caitlyn at age 65?  Jenner is a brilliant brand strategist who set the stage to transition with the panache of an Olympian.

Caitlyn Jenner is a role model not only for the transgender community, but for everyone and anyone who is struggling with their identity: professional, personal, or both.

Crafting the Caitlyn Jenner Brand

Jenner walked on a tightrope for 55 years balancing two identities: Right Fit Gender and Wrong Fit Gender.  The balancing act began at age 10, when Bruce started trying on his mother’s and sister’s clothes.

Some people question his motivation for transitioning at the age of 65 to Caitlyn.  Reflecting on Bruce’s complex personality coupled with unique contradictions, indicates that his decision to wait was wise.  He understood what he needed to do to prepare himself, his children, and the public to receive Caitlyn.  Unlike many who transition and then commit suicide, Bruce’s strategic approach incorporated safeguards to prevent suicide.  He distracted himself from his fears.  He focused on others including his family, his mission to positively change the transgender community, and crafting the Caitlyn brand. 

Let’s walk in his shoes and her shoes to experience the evolution of Caitlyn.

Bruce kept his desire to become Caitlyn a secret until the early seventies when his first wife Christie Crownover noticed that there was a rubber band on her bra.  When she asked Bruce about it, he told her that he wanted to be a woman and that’s why he was wearing her clothes.

During his first marriage, at the age of 26, Bruce won the Olympic Decathlon Gold Medal with the title World’s Greatest Athlete.  Winning the gold medal did nothing to make him feel that he was a successful man.  In fact, his desire to become a woman became stronger.  Visualize his Olympic achievement as the tipping point.  From that time onward, Bruce crafted two brands concurrently. 

Publicly, he played the role of Bruce the gold medalist and privately he practiced with the precision of an Olympian to become Caitlyn.  As Bruce, he wore a bra and pantyhose under his suit to professional meetings and presentations.  After his divorce from Christie, he married two more women: Linda Thompson and Kris Kardashian.  Bruce continued practicing to become a woman which also included taking hormones.

What finally convinced him to transition?  A series of events set the stage for Caitlyn.
  • Before training for the Olympics he learned that he had gender dysphoria.  Simply stated: he was a woman trapped in a man’s body.  When your body doesn’t match your image it leads to stress, anxiety, and depression.  Winning the Olympics, strengthened his desire to become a woman not a man.  He accepted gender dysphoria, with the ultimate goal of transition. 
  • Early in his marriage to Kris Kardashian, she started managing his floundering career.   When the Kardashian reality show was launched in 2007, Kris became the breadwinner which negatively impacted their marriage.  When they divorced in 2014, after 23 years of marriage Bruce, at age 65, started taking steps to transition again, after stopping hormones in the past.
  • When TMZ contacted Bruce asking him to confirm his consultation to have a tracheal shave, he pleaded with them not to make the announcement, but they proceeded to do so.  This announcement was another critical tipping point moving toward transition.  
After the TMZ announcement, Bruce had to quickly strategize how to ignite, fire up, and explode the Caitlyn brand.  This is what he did:
  1. Told each child separately his true gender identity.
  2. Publicly announced to an audience of 16.9 million on his Diane Sawyer interview that he would transition to become a transgender woman.
  3. Spent 10 hours in surgery to become Caitlyn.
  4. Interviewed by Vanity Fair for the July 2015 cover story “Call me Caitlyn” which included a fascinating array of photos and a striking cover.
  5. Debuted Caitlyn on Twitter which resulted in more that 1 million followers in 4 hours, setting a record exceeding Obama.
  6. Planned a reality show “I am Cait” which airs on July 26th on E at 9pm PST.
Jenner is a brilliant brand strategist!


On July 15, 2015 Caitlyn Jenner will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at ESPN's ESPYs on ABC.  Past winners include: Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, and Billie Jean King.  Caitlyn Jenner will join this illustrious group.

The Caitlyn Jenner brand will continue to explode but Bruce Jenner will not be forgotten

Caitlyn Jenner: Becoming Who You Want to Be

At age 10, Bruce would sneak into his sister’s or mother’s closet and try on their dresses.  He was terrified that someone would find out what he was doing.  Bruce felt that he was a girl trapped in a boy’s body When her was older, he learned that he had gender dysphoria.

From age 10 onward, Jenner managed two identities.  Finally, at age 65 after struggling with his identity for 55 years, Jenner had the confidence and courage to transition to Caitlyn.
The struggle to “become who you want to be” is a universal struggle.  Everyone, at some point in their life, struggles with their personal and professional identity.  Some are always struggling dissatisfied with their solutions.  Others submerge the struggle because they are unable to figure out the Right Fit personal and professional life that would satisfy their needs and make them happy.  These people will die unfulfilled.

Jenner beat the odds!  He could have attempted suicide, which is not uncommon in the transgender community.

The critics try to distract us from the significance of what Jenner accomplished.  They argue that he is not a woman because he did not have genital surgery.   First of all, it is not advised to have genital surgery for at least one year after transition.  We do not know what Caitlyn will do in the future.  Moreover, according to the transgender community, this type of surgery is not required to be considered a transgender woman.  Let’s focus on the significance of her accomplishment.

On July 15, 2015 Caitlyn Jenner will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in Los Angeles.  Past winners include:  Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, and Billie Jean King.  Caitlyn Jenner will join this illustrious group.

Caitlyn Jenner became who she wanted to be.  Her brand will continue to soar as she serves as a role model not just for the transgender community, but for everyone and anyone who is struggling with their identity.
