Dennis Meredith: King of Scientific Communications

Talk Show host Dr. Arlene Barro created her WIN Without Competing! show for candidates, employees, entrepreneurs and employers to learn about her Right Fit Method from her guest interviews.

On WIN Without Competing! Dr. Arlene will interview distinguished science writer and communicator Dennis Meredith who is the author of Explaining Research, to be published by Oxford University Press on March 1st, 2010. Meredith, an adventurer, not only writes about science but also lives it. He wrote an article which included photos of what was believed to be the Loch Ness monster. This led to a New York Times-sponsored expedition to Loch Ness. Meredith served as the press officer on this expedition and wrote Search at Loch Ness.

Meredith has had a fascinating career. He ventured on the Loch Ness expedition with Harold “Doc” Edgerton, inventor of the strobe light; prepared the historic news release announcing synthesis of the first artificial gene by Nobel Prize winner Har Gobind Khorana, and helped Nobel Prizewinning physicist Richard Feynman explain his controversial opinions about the cause of the space shuttle Challenger disaster. Meredith worked at some of the country’s leading research universities, including MIT, Caltech, Cornell, Duke and the University of Wisconsin. He has helped science journalists at all the nation’s major newspapers, magazines, and radio and TV networks and has written well over a thousand news releases and magazine articles on science and engineering over his career.

His scientific training as a chemist and biochemist coupled with his passion for communicating accurate scientific findings to the public led him to create and develop, with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the international research and news service – EurekAlert! – which now links more than 4,500 journalists to news from 800 subscribing research institutions. The AAAS honored Meredith in 2007 by electing him as an AAAS Fellow “for exemplary leadership in university communications, and for important contributions to the theory and practice of research communications.”

Here are some of the other adventures that Meredith will share as his career unfolds: tramping across the California desert with seismologists recording microquakes for clues to the shifting crust; standing breathless atop a 14,000-foot Hawaiian mountain peak with astronomers breaking ground for an immense telescope to peer deeper into the cosmos than ever before, and watching a 50-foot research balloon, looking like a giant quivering jellyfish, soar into space carrying an instrument to detect gamma rays from distant astronomical objects.

Join Dr. Arlene as she uncovers what really goes on behind the curtain of science and what people need to know about scientific breakthroughs.

On WIN Without Competing! Dr. Arlene will interview award-winning author Serita Stevens who has had 30 published books to her credit including two non-fiction books: The Forensic Nurse and The Book of Poisons. As a forensic nurse, Stevens was trained to observe evidence that physicians may overlook. She has been frequently first on the scene of a crime or in an emergency room which puts her in a unique position to collect evidence regarding accidents, alleged sexual assault, spousal abuse and other violent incidents. Her book The Forensic Nurse – how nurses help police solve crimes – is currently being turned into a television drama in Canada (CTV) with Greg Bell (former showrunner of Bones) as the head of production.

Writers frequently questioned Stevens on how to kill off their characters in their books. Stevens, recognizing their need, wrote The Book of Poisons to instruct writers on how to murder their victims correctly. Any questions about poisons?

Stevens, a highly versatile writer, has turned her attention to scriptwriting with “Murder Me Twice” (a reincarnation thriller and winner at Cinema City International Film Fest as best script,) “Mother In Law” (a female driven dramady with a supernatural twist – also a winner at CCIFF and at Broad Humor Festival,) “Dragon Seeds” (a psychological horror written with director Sean McNamara,) “The Presence” (a psychological horror), and “Guilty Prey” (you always thought your attorney’s were blood suckers and now they are.) She is currently working on a TV pilot “Gangsta” (about the cops who run the gang land stations) and “A Match Made in Heaven” (a true romantic comedy.)

Her awards include: the Edgar Award Best Horror Short and Best Short Script at Cinema City for The Unborn, now a film (www.theunbornfilm.com); the Anthony Award and McCavity Award for Unholy Orders; the Anthony Award and McCavity Award for Red Sea, Dead Sea; Best Biblical Romance from Romance Writers of America for Lightning and Fire; Best Western Suspense from Romance Writers of America for Deceptive Desires now a script entitled “Logan’s Land”.

Watch for Stevens’ films “Saving Spirit” and “The Chaperone" on the Hallmark Channel.

Currently, Stevens lives in the Los Angeles area with her actor husband, daughter, her cats – Caesar, Othello and Goldie and her dogs – Pupperazzi (who likes to hound her), Cupcake and Sophia.

Disclosing Name of Job Seeker who WINS the 2009 Right Fit Award

Los Angeles, CA (barro global search, inc.) April 21, 2009. Founder and CEO Dr. Arlene Barro conducted a nationwide search to find the Right Fit Winner who has been unemployed for six or more months, not read Dr. Arlene’s book WIN Without Competing! Career Success the Right Fit Way nor listened to her radio show. The failed job search strategies of the winner include blasting resumes from Burbank to Bombay. The winner represents the millions of unemployed who are using the same ineffective strategies. Long term unemployment is the result. It’s time to stop taking the Shotgun Road with no destination and switch to the Right Fit Road and hear “You’re Hired.”

In our current economic situation both employees and entrepreneurs should be ready to implement the Right Fit Method in case the ax should fall. New grads entering the workplace with few or no accomplishments need a new way to find a job.

To select the winner, barro global search, inc. did not compare and contrast contestants to identify the best. Instead, we focused on finding one unemployed person who matched the Blueprint of the Right Fit. Wondering why the winner is the Right Fit not the Best?

The Winner
Nat Bothwell, MBA: The Winner of the 2009 Right Fit Award is 38 years old, a bank employee for 12 years after receiving his MBA, who was given two hours notice before losing his job on May 9, 2008 as the corporate Executive Vice President of Marketing of ANB Bancshares in Bentonville, Arkansas, one of the first banks in the country to close its doors, which included 12 locations. At its peak, the Bank had 2+ billion in assets.

Nat is not only searching for the Right Fit Job but also could be searching for the Right Fit spouse or significant other. He lives with his four-year-old dog Tanner who is a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

The Winner WINS
Wednesday, April 22 at 5pm PDT On the WIN Without Competing! show featured on BlogTalkRadio, Dr. Arlene will coach Nat live on how to implement her Right Fit Method (he will be able to apply the Method to find the Right Fit spouse or significant other too) and walk with him down the Right Fit Road. It is up to Nat to change his behavior and get himself ready to hear “You’re Hired.” Dr. Arlene and her listeners will follow and encourage Nat on his journey until he succeeds. Then barro global search, inc. will name Nat the WIN Without Competing! Man and present him with an engraved gift with his new title. From that point forward the phrase “Remember Nat” will remind job seekers to use the Right Fit Method and WIN.
